We’re all the same…

By  Lysette Offley

We're all the sameExcept for those who aren’t!

We Human beings have a lot in common, and yet there are so many differences too, especially when it comes to trying to remember something.

We process information differently. We store and we retrieve information differently.

And thank goodness for that! It would make for a very dull life otherwise.

Though having said that, probably most of our problems come from the fact that we are so easily able to misinterpret each other, assuming the other person:

  1. Knows what we’re batting on about and
  2. Agrees with us!

You know what I mean, don’t you?

I’ve had some conversations this week with professional people spending a lot of their precious time attempting to learn information that will have them pass qualification and compliance exams.

They’ve become resigned to taking the same blinkin’ exams multiple times, no longer even hoping to pass first time.

It’s not because they’re incapable, it’s simply because they don’t have a good study strategy. And by good, I mean a good fit for the way that they process information.

Most people have no idea what’s the easiest and most efficient way to learn the sort of stuff you get in the classroom. They simply do what they know, and it either works enough or it doesn’t.

And it may be a sign of madness to do the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome, but if that’s all you’ve got, that’s what you’re going to do. Only… harder than ever, because since it didn’t work before, you gotta do something different.

And of course, that way madness lies! And if not madness, a lot of wasted time, frustration in despair.

Do yourself a favour, find out how your brain prefers to learn and then stop wasting your time doing stuff that was never going to work.

Do we really have different learning styles?
