What to study for the Advanced Diploma exam

What to study for the RO1 exam - photo of exam paperKnowing what to study and how to study for your Advanced Diploma exam when faced with a gargantuan course manual full of dry text, is a common problem among IFAs.

And who could be surprised?

Most of us have never been taught how to revise and most people don’t know what you have to do to compensate for the fact that Human beings are hardwired to forget. Yes! It’s true! From an evolutionary perspective, it’s been essential that we are able to forget older, out of date information in favour of remembering current and therefore important stuff.

Imagine our forefathers, living in caves 10,000 years ago. How much more important was it to remember where they saw the herd of deer last night than where it was spotted 3 months ago? And even today, how much more useful is it to us to remember where we left our car keys this morning rather than this time last year?

However, we easily retain even old information, if it occurs to our automatic unconscious mind (that part of our brain that helps us make sense of the world and keep us safe) that it’s vitally important to our survival. So something like the colour, size and shape of a particular berry and the sort of tree it came from would be easily remembered if the eating of it caused the untimely demise of aunt Mary 10 years ago!

So forgetting things is a very useful skill. But perhaps not when it comes to passing your Advanced Diploma exam! So how can you work out what to study first or indeed, how to study for your Advanced Diploma exam, so that you understand how to achieve Chartered exam success by retaining the information you’re learning?

Well, it’s important to understand that while we Human beings have a lot in common, there are differences between us in the way that we process, store and retrieve information. The more you understand how your brain prefers to do this, the more able you are to tailor your revision accordingly.

It is reckoned that 71% of students are not revising according to how their brain prefers to learn. Don’t be one of them. When you join us you will not only learn how to learn – for your Advanced Diploma exam – but also how your brain does this best.
