Which tribe do you belong to?

By  Lysette Offley

Richard Bandler (co-founder of NLP) famously asks, “How much happiness can you stand?” child smilingHow would you answer that?

And when asked what you do for fun, can you answer immediately or do you find yourself desperately trying to remember the last time you had any? (Fun, that is! Ha ha!)

Are you, like so many people today, so busy that you have hardly any time for the fun activities that light your candle? If so, watch out! You could be inadvertently setting yourself up to be miserable.

We are hardwired to belong, to be sociable, to spend our time in the company of others, and we naturally gravitate towards other people with whom we can share meaningful activity. It could be a cause or a belief or a goal – anything that creates a feeling of ‘us’.

But, between 1985 and 1994, involvement in community groups declined by 45%. Is it any wonder that so many of us, despite the popularity of ‘social’ media, is lonely?

Feeling lonely skyrockets your stress hormone, cortisol. This is not good!

In fact, it’s as stressful to the body as actual physical assault. Ouch!

The solution?

Think, smile!

Spend more time with people who make you smile, enjoying activities together that also make you smile.

There’s a great article about it here, which also mentions other, scientifically proven ways of feeling happier.

Fortunately, it’s never too late to improve your lot.

How happy was I to be treated to our hotel staff’s Happy Dance, in Marrakech!
