Oh dearie me! Yet more bad news for people who have difficulty sleeping.
The latest, from Loughborough University’s sleep research Centre, is that if you don’t sleep along enough or well enough, you won’t just mess up your memory, immune system and your body’s natural response to stress, but you’ll also bugger up the genes that control your metabolism, which is why people who don’t sleep so well, tend to be overweight or diabetic.
And we’re talking about people who sleep less than 6 hours a night, either because they can’t stay asleep any longer than that, or because the sleep they do have is disrupted. That’s many of us, isn’t it? It’s a serious issue, and something we should pay attention to.
The 700 or so genes affected by poor sleep are thought to increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, stress and depression, not to mention, speedup the ageing process.
